You and your friends have decided to buy a meal at The Math Café. Each member of your group has at most $30 to spend. Don’t forget to leave enough money for tax and tip 😊 Answer the following questions below. Show all work.
What will you order? Look at the attached menu and circle what you would like to eat. You must order at least three items and spend at most $30. List your choices in the space below and copy them on to the guest check (see #8).
How much will your meal cost? Add the prices for each item you ordered to calculate the subtotal for your order. Don’t forget to line up the decimal. Record the subtotal to the Guest Check when you are finished.
Subtotal = Item 1 + Item 2 + Item 3 + ....
You just remembered that you have a coupon for 20% off your total bill!!! How much will get take off of your bill? Calculate the discount amount and write it in the guest check
Discount = Subtotal x Percent
What is your new total after the discount is applied? Calculate it and record it on your guest check.
New Subtotal = Subtotal - Discount
The tax rate is 9%. How much tax will you need to add to your bill? Do you still have enough money? If not, you will need to rethink what you are ordering. Record the tax amount on the guest check.
Tax = New Subtotal x Tax Percent
When dining out, you should always leave a tip for your waiter or waitress. Today a 15% tip is included in your bill. How much is the tip you are leaving? Do you still have enough money? If not, you will need to rethink what you are ordering. Calculate the tip using the new subtotal (from #4). Write in guest check.
Tip = New Subtotal x Tip Percent
How much will your meal cost including tax and tip? Calculate the grand total for your meal at the Math Café. Write it and circle it on your guest check.
Grand Total = New Subtotal + Tax + Tip
Fill in the guest check as you calculate each amount.
