The main idea is the most important part of the passage. You can think of it like a lock. But before you can unlock your main idea you have to find the __________. There are two different types of main ideas. Sometimes the main idea is written in the text. This is call an explicit main idea. An explicit main idea means the main idea is one of the sentences in the passage.

The second type of main idea is called implied main idea. An implied main idea means you have to create the main idea using the key details in the passage. An implied main idea is not found in the passage. You have to put it in your own words.

All main ideas answer the question "What is the most important point of the passage?"
