India's Religious Diversity
Diversity in Delhi reflects India's religious landscape. Though a large majority in India are Hindu, also a number of other religions have long traditions in the country. Islam is the second largest religion in India. Yet there are also many Sikhs, Christians, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis and more. Some say that the reason Indian culture is so tolerant is because one of the core beliefs of Hinduism is that each person is allowed to worship any god they choose.

Why was India split into two countries?
By: Haimanti Roy
In 1947, the British viceroy announced that after 200 years of British rule, India would gain independence (freedom to control one's self) and be partitioned (split up) into Hindu India and Muslim Pakistan. What followed was one of the largest and bloodiest forced migrations (the permanent change of residence by an individual or group) in history: an estimated 1 million people lost their lives.

The reader will note that I have purposely refrained from using the word divine (coming from God or gods) origin in reference to the Vedas or any other scriptures (holy writing).
For I do not believe in the exclusive divinity of the Vedas.
I believe the Bible, the Quran, and the Zend Avesta (holy book of Zoroastrianism) to be as much divinely inspired as the Vedas.
My belief in the Hindu scriptures does not require me to accept every word.
Nor do I claim to have any firsthand knowledge of these wonderful books.
But I do claim to know and feel the truths of the essential teaching of the scriptures.
I decline to be bound by any interpretation.
I believe that our present knowledge of these books is in a most chaotic state.
One need not despair of ever knowing the truth of one's religion, because the fundamentals of Hinduism, as of every great religion, are unchangeable, and easily understood.
