What is a gene?

What is an allele?

Each variation of a gene is called an allele (pronounced 'AL-eel'). These two copies of the gene contained in your chromosomes influence the way your cells work. The two alleles in a gene pair are inherited, one from each parent. Alleles interact with each other in different ways.
1

You get one allele for a trait from your mom and one from your dad.

Dominant and recessive genes. The most common interaction between alleles is a dominant/recessive relationship. An allele of a gene is said to be dominant when it effectively overrules the other (recessive) allele. Eye colour and blood groups are both examples of dominant/recessive gene relationships.

Dominant alleles show their effect even if the individual only has one copy of the allele (also known as being heterozygous?). For example, the allele for brown eyes is dominant, therefore you only need one copy of the ‘brown eye’ allele to have brown eyes (although, with two copies you will still have brown eyes).

Recessive alleles only show their effect if the individual has two copies of the allele (also known as being homozygous?). For example, the allele for blue eyes is recessive, therefore to have blue eyes you need to have two copies of the ‘blue eye’ allele.
1

Recessive alleles will only express a trait when there are NO dominant alleles.

Which of the following is the correct defintion of Genotype?

Which of the following is the correct defintion of Phenotype?

1

Select ALL the following that are examples of a Genotype.

1

Select ALL the following that are examples of a Phenotype.

1

Select ALL the following staments that are true.

TIME TO CREATE A PUNNETT SQUARE!

Directions: Brown is the DOMINANT fur color for rabbits and white is the RECESSIVE. B stands for the brown allele and b represents the white allele. A white rabbit would have a genotype of bb and a black rabbit could have a genotype of BB or Bb.

1

Complete the punnett square below and label each square with the color of rabbit it's genotype (BB, bb, etc.) represents.
