Nature is filled with strange plants and animals. Some live in far-off places. Others can be found right near your home. One example is a special group of spiders. They know how to soar through the air.
Even though they do not have wings, these spiders can fly though the air. They do this in a very unusual way. The spiders spin silk webs. Then they use the webs just like kites. They can do this because a spider’s web is very light and very strong. A web can also be shaped in different ways. The spider climbs to the top of a plant or rock. It starts spinning lines of silk. These silk lines seem to float in the air like sails. The wind catches the lines. The lines carry the spider away.
The spider cannot really steer through the air. It just lets the wind carry it to another place. Spiders can travel miles on their kites carried by the wind. After a while, the wind stops or the web gets tangled in something. The spider climbs away from the web and looks for a new home.
