Most birds have very light bones. This makes it easier for them to fly. Large birds flap their wings slowly. Small birds flap their wings very fast. Hummingbirds are among the smallest birds. They beat their wings very fast. The speed is fifty to eighty times every second. Because their wings flap so fast, they make a noise that sounds like humming. That special sound is what gave hummingbirds their name. Large birds do not need to flap their wings much. They have big wings. They can glide through the air. They spread out their wings. These birds seem to float on the wind. Birds like eagles and seagulls can glide for a long time. Owls have special wing feathers. They can fly fast and quietly. Birds that dive to catch animals need strong wings. Each bird has special wings to help it do what it needs to do.
