Ruff wanted to be a watchdog more than anything else. The other puppies wanted to be pets, but not Ruff. He wanted to find a family to protect.
One day a family with two children came in to adopt a dog. The boy and girl loved Ruff right away. The father said they needed a watchdog, and Ruff might grow up to be a big dog. Ruff had a new home.
The family gave Ruff a doghouse, a dish, and a big yard. Ruff was as happy as a dog could be. Most of the time, Ruff stayed in the house with the family. At night, he stayed in his doghouse if the weather was good.
One night, Ruff sniffed the air and smelled smoke. Ruff knew this was dangerous. He barked and barked. He ran to the house and jumped on the door and barked again. The people came out. They smelled the smoke and saw the fire. They were all happy Ruff had kept barking. Ruff had become a real watchdog, and his family loved him more than ever.
