Winter can be a hard time for many animals. With so much cold and snow, it is hard to find food. This is especially true for birds. They need a lot of food to keep warm. How do they survive? Humans help them out a little.
Many people feed birds in the winter by putting seeds in a feeder. When birds come to eat, the people can watch them. The people like the birds, and the birds get a free meal.
Different birds eat different things, which is why birdseed is a mix of many seeds. One kind of feed will attract certain kinds of birds. Each bird will eat the kinds of seeds it likes.
Most feeders are made so birds can get the seeds easily. The feeder can be up on a pole, or it might hang from a tree. They have places where birds can land. Some feeders have a little roof to protect the seeds from rain and snow.
The top of a bird feeder comes off. People put the seeds in the top. There are small openings in the feeder. This is where the birds eat.
