Wild animals are not the only ones who have a hard time in cold weather. Winter is also tough on farm animals. They need good food and clean water. They also need a place to stay warm. Farmers must be sure that the outside water for their animals does not freeze. They use a kind of small heater. They put the heater in a tank of water. This warms it just a bit, but it is enough to stop the water from freezing. When the animals are outside, they have something to drink.
Barns are a good place for animals. They go there to stay warm, and the wind can not get to them. Animals make their own heat, so they keep each other warm. Farmers put bales of hay around the walls of the barn. This makes the barn warmer. In places where it is really cold, barns are heated just like houses.
When there is snow on the ground, farmers bring food to the animals. The farmers carry bales of hay or other food into the barn. When the animals see the farmer, they run right over. They know it is time to eat.
