Animals are good at adapting to the weather and terrain where they live. A good example is prairie dogs. These are small animals that are native to the West. They live where it is dry for much of the year, but they have adapted.
Prairie dogs have some enemies, predators that want to eat them. They have a tricky way to stay safe. Their color helps them hide because it is the same color as the dirt.
The fur of a prairie dog is light brown and white. The colors match the desert or plains where they live. It is hard to see a prairie dog when it is in the desert. That is a good thing because they can hide from their enemies. Snakes and owls are just a few of their enemies.
Prairie dogs hide in another way. They live underground. They dig holes under the dirt. Their holes are called towns because many prairie dogs might live in one location. Some prairie dogs guard the holes by looking for enemies. When they see one, they let the others know. They make loud barking calls so the other prairie dogs know it is time to hide. They all dive into their holes. They wait until it is safe to come out.
