Abe looked out the window. The rain had stopped. The sky was still gray. He glanced over at his mom. He said, “I think it’s time to start gardening.”
“Very funny, Abe,” his mother said. “Look at the weather outside!”
Abe tried not to smile as he said, “Well, there is no garden yet. There is a lot to do to get it ready.”
He went into the kitchen and grabbed a plastic bowl next to the sink. The bowl was full of fruit scraps, bread crusts, and eggshells. Abe and his mother walked into the yard. Abe went up to a brown bin and lifted its lid. Inside were grass clippings, banana peels, and coffee grounds.
His mother took a stick and pushed back some of the compost. Underneath were all sorts of wriggling red worms.
“Wow,” she said, “I can’t believe how many worms there are!”
“Maybe we should have shirts printed up that say Worm Patrol,” Abe replied. “In the spring, we can move the worms to our new garden.”
