Walking in the Sand of Our Ancestors
1 The Sahara Desert is the largest desert in the world. Living in that hot and dry climate is a group of people almost as old as the desert itself: the Berbers. Today, the Berbers live all across the desert region.

In the Early Days
2 The Berbers have lived in this area for hundreds of years. The Berbers are nomads. Nomads are people who travel from place to place.

3 When the Arabs came to North Africa, the Berbers adopted many of their customs. Traveling with large camel trains, the Berbers carried a wide variety of trade goods. These goods included cloth, salt, and gold. These caravans, crossed the desert between cities and towns.

A Nomadic Life
4 Many Berbers today continue to live in groups made up of large extended families. Besides people, there are animals, such as sheep, goats, camels, and horses.

A Changing Way of Life

Animals in Antarctica

A Cold Home

Antarctica is one of the seven continents. It is one of the coldest places on Earth, but there are many animals that make their home in this frozen land. Two of the animals that live there are penguins and seals.

Penguins

Six different types of penguins live in Antartica. Penguins are good swimmers and can hold their breath for up to twenty minutes. They have a top layer of oily feathers that help them stay dry in the water while they look for food. They have a special kind of feather underneath, called down, which helps keep them warm.

Seals

More than half of the world's seals live in Antartica. They are good swimmers and can dive deep for food. Seals can hold their breath for about two hours! Seals have very good hearing. They cannot see color, but special parts of their eyes help them see underwater where there is not much light. Some seals have loud voices.

Antartica Facts

- The South Pole is in Antartica.
- Almost all of Antartica is covered in ice.
- Antartica can be called a desert because it gets very little rain each year.
