People like to look at the moon. Some people think
they see a man’s face in the moon. Others see a rabbit
or even a buffalo. What are people really seeing? They
are seeing mountains, craters, and shadows on the
moon’s surface. These things only look like animals
when you use your imagination.
Almost two hundred years ago, a man said there
were real animals on the moon. He wrote six stories in
a newspaper. People were surprised at what he wrote.
It sounded really crazy, but no one was sure if he was
telling the truth.
The stories said that goats and unicorns lived on
the moon! They also said that the moon had beavers
without tails. The biggest news was that people with
wings lived on the moon and that the moon had its own
trees, beaches, and oceans. The writer of the stories
said he could see all of this because had made a new
kind of telescope.
At that time, there were a lot of new science discoveries.
Some of them were hard to believe, but they were true.
One scientist found a new planet, while another invented
an electric battery.
Of course, none of the moon news was true. The man
made up the whole story, and there were no animals
or people on the moon. But many people bought the
newspapers. They believed the stories, and they were
not happy when they discovered it was just a big joke.
The writer only wanted to get people excited. He wrote
the stories to sell a lot of newspapers, which he did.
People got excited about the moon, and the paper made
a lot of money.
