The car pulled into the campground and drove around
looking for an open spot. The driver stopped, and two
people got out of the car.
Mr. and Mrs. Perez set up the tent, making as little
noise as possible. When they finished, they went over
to the car. The kids were sound asleep in the back of
the car. They woke the children up and helped them into
their sleeping bags, and then everybody went to sleep.
The next morning, they all got up just as the sky was
getting light. None of them had taken a look around the
campground before going to sleep. It was dark, and they
were tired. This morning was their first chance to see
where they were, and they were all very excited!
The sun rose over the top of the mountain. Fish
started breaking the surface of the nearby stream. Each
time they rose to the surface, the fish left a small ring
of water. The rings spread across the pond, and as they
bumped into one another, they sparkled in the sunlight.
“I wonder what the fish are doing,” Pablo said to Linda.
The two of them had walked to the edge of the lake.
“Probably eating breakfast,” answered a voice behind
them. “Lots of animals eat in the morning.”
They turned to see their mother standing right there.
Mrs. Perez hugged the children, and the three of them
watched the fish quietly for a few minutes.
“Let’s head back to the tent,” suggested Mrs. Perez.
“Maybe we can convince Dad to cook a good breakfast
before we head off for our first hike. We have a busy
day ahead of us.”
