Many schools now have small nature areas. Most of
these have a bird feeder of some kind. If your school
has a feeder, try this idea. If you don’t have a feeder,
maybe you can get some teachers and students
interested in putting one out.
Find a spot that is close enough to the feeder to see
the birds, but do not get so close that you scare them
away. Perhaps you can find a place to hide so the birds
won’t see you. Using a pair of binoculars will let you
see the birds a little better.
During the day, keep a record of the birds that are at
the feeder. Write down each type of bird and how many
there are of each type. If possible, watch the feeder at
different times each day.
Create a list of birds that come to the feeder. If you
don’t know the names of the birds, look them up. You
probably have books in the library that will help you. You
can also search the Internet for information about birds.
There may be some “birders” in your area who can help
you name the birds.
Make a wall chart with the name of each bird that
appears at the feeder. Maybe you can put up a picture
of each bird. In addition, keep a detailed notebook
showing what the birds were doing.
This activity can lead to other projects. You can keep
a list of birds. You can also study bird families. You can
find out the times of the day that are best for spotting
birds. Different birds will come at different times of
the year.
