The students lined up outside the theater waiting to
get in. The show they would see is The Queen Bee, one
of the most popular musicals ever. Most of the students
had never seen a live production. But they knew this story
from the movies. They couldn’t wait to see live actors
playing the roles.
“Oh, no,” whispered Keri to Ron, “We were all so
excited that we forgot to ask about captions for the deaf
students in the class. What was Mr. Royster thinking?”
“Thank you for your concern,” laughed Mr. Royster,
who was close enough to hear them. “Do you think
that I would ever forget about our deaf students? Just
wait until you see what is waiting for us inside.”
As they found their seats inside, Keri and Ron
understood what Mr. Royster was talking about. The
deaf students were guided to an area near the front of
the theater. Waiting for them was a Sign Language
interpreter. He introduced himself by talking and signing
at the same time, so the others would know who he was.
The deaf students already knew him because he was
famous as an interpreter for the governor, the mayor,
and others.
Keri left her seat for a minute and ran up to the
interpreter. She gave him a big hug and said while
signing, “You knew all along you were going to be here
and said nothing?”
Her cousin Bob smiled and answered, “You are exactly
right. Mr. Royster and I planned this whole thing knowing
that you would probably be worried. But everything is
under control, and I hope you will enjoy my signs as well
as the musical.”
