We come to find out that Oliver went to prison for the murder but was not actually guilty. He was released after 10 years. Filippa was the only one to keep in contact with him but he decides to resume his relationship with Meredith. He ultimately discovers a jarring and life altering conclusion about one of his friends on the last page.
Meredith bails Oliver out of jail after he was arrested for the murder. The actual murderer confesses but dies after a few days in prison. The friend group moves to England, and resumes their studies at the Shakspear Kings instute and refuse to speak about what happened that year, only to find out that the murderer was not actually deceased.
James and Oliver understand the outcome that Meredith has put into motion. The pair leave in the middle of the night and take the train to Oregon leaving their identities, friends, and studies behind. Unfourtunatley the trauma and guilt are too much and James and Oliver become distant and eventually part way after a few years. The last page imlies that Oliver marries Meredith.
