Explain why the color of test tube A changed/stayed the same. Be sure to mention light, CO2, and if photosynthesis occurred.

Sentence Starter: Test tube A turned (blue/yellow) because carbon dioxide was (high/low) due to

Relate your results to the peat/permafrost system. How does the color change in your test tubes help you explain how there could have been so many plants in the Arctic that died and became the peat that is there today?

Plants store excess sugars as starch. Starch is a complex carbohydrate. Carbohydrates contain a lot of carbon.

The presence of starch can be determined with an iodine test. The procedure for this investigation is as follows:

If the iodine solution interacts with starch, it turns a blue-black color.

If there is no starch, the iodine solution turns a reddish-brown color.

A clipping from test tube B (direct light) and C (no light) were tested for the presence of starch.
