*Read the passage and answer the three questions
  • Conjunctions (FANBOYS) are often, but not always, preceded by a comma.
  • Only add a comma before a conjunction if the comma/conjunction pair is separating two independent clauses.
  • Make sure the clause on either side of the comma/conjunction could be its own sentence. If not, then a comma is not necessary.
Steps:
  1. Find the FANBOYS
  2. Look on both sides
  3. If there is a complete sentence on each side, you need a comma.
Example Lacks two independent clauses: He went to the bookstore, and bought a book.
Revision: He went to the bookstore and bought a book.
Read this paragraph and answer the following questions:

There are other schools that do not require auditions, but require that you get high grades. Those special admission schools are called magnet schools. Students are admitted to a magnet school if they have good grades and do well on tests. Students get selected based on an application process; and the application process is very involved.
