Part 1 - Research
Task:
After you have looked at the sources on the left side of the screen, you will answer some questions about them. Briefly scan the sources and the five questions below. Then, go back and read the sources carefully so you will have the information you will need to answer the questions and complete your research. You may take notes on the information you find in the sources as you read to use as you answer questions.

In Part 2, you will write an informational essay about a topic related to the sources.

Directions for Beginning:
You will now examine several sources. You can go back to any of the sources as often as you like.

Research Questions:
After reading the sources, use the rest of the time in Part 1 to answer five questions about them. Your answers to these questions will be scored. Also, your answers will help you think about the information you have read and reviewed, which should help you write your informational essay in Part 2.

Part 2 - Informative Writing
Your Assignment: Your class is putting together an informational brochure about the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) for a Disability Awareness Month campaign. Each person in your class has been assigned a different task to help complete the brochure.
Your assignment is to write an informational essay about the 504 Sit-In (1977 protest in San Francisco). In your informational essay, you should explain why the 504 Sit-In is important and how it lead to the passage of the ADA in 1990. Present at least three different examples of what makes the 504 Sit-In important and historic. Make sure that you include specific details from the sources that you have read.

Explanatory Article Scoring Your essay will be scored using the following:
  • Organization/Purpose: How well did you state your thesis (claim - answer to the prompt), and maintain your thesis with a logical progression of ideas from beginning to end? How well did you narrow your thesis so you can develop and elaborate the conclusion? How well did you consistently use a variety of transitions? How effective was your introduction and your conclusion?
  • Elaboration/Evidence: How well did you integrate relevant and specific information from the sources? How well did you elaborate your ideas? How well did you clearly state ideas using precise language that is appropriate for your audience and purpose?
  • Conventions: How well did you follow the rules of grammar usage, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling?
