Part 1 Set-up Steps:

Choose the “Atom” simulation.
Click plus signs to open the information on net charge and mass number.
Click the box for Stable/Unstable.
Use the periodic table to help you build an atom of Beryllium.
Add protons until the box for Beryllium (Be) turns red.
Add neutrons until it tells you it is stable.

Now, continue to the questions below, which will require you to do other things in the simulation.

What is currently written to the upper right side of the atom?

What is currently shown for net charge?

In the simulation and add electrons one at a time. In the answer box, write a brief description of what happens to the net charge as you add electrons.

Go back to the simulation and add one more electron to your atom. Then come back to this answer box and briefly describe what happens to the net charge?

Part 2 Set-up Steps:

This time, choose the “Symbol” simulation.
Rebuild your atom of Beryllium (Be). Click the Stable/unstable box again if needed.
As you add the electrons, notice where the charge shows up in the symbol notation.

Now, continue to the questions below, which will require you to do other things in the simulation.

Draw the symbol notation for a neutral, stable atom of Beryllium in box 1 in the show-your-work space.

Remove two electrons from your Beryllium atom and draw the symbol notation for this atom in box 2 in the show-your-work space.

Briefly describe in words how your symbol notation changed between box 1 and box 2.

Does removing electrons from a neutral atom cause it to have a positive or negative charge?
