Text A

People used animals to pull carts for thousands of years. The wheel wasn’t invented when the first carts were used. Animals just dragged carts through the dirt. The invention of the wheel in 3,500 BCE would change the world forever. Wheels allowed people to transport heavier loads in a shorter time. Some people began to combine wheels with gears and axles. These parts would be important in the first cars built many years later.

Text B

I wonder how hard it would be to build a cart. I have some donkeys on my farm, and it would be helpful if they could pull a cart for me. I think I would need some wheels, but I wonder how to connect them to the cart. I think I would put two wheels on a long metal pole. Then I would attach the donkeys!

A student is writing a science report for her teacher.

Read the paragraph from the student’s report. Where is the hottest place on Earth? The answer is not so simple. The hottest places can change from year to year. The temperature at Death Valley, California, was a roasting 134 degrees Fahrenheit on July 10, 1913. That’s too hot for me! Scientists can use satellites to measure temperatures in hard-to-reach places. In 2005, a satellite over the Lut Desert in Iran recorded the unbelievable temperature of 159.3 degrees! Some of the other hottest places are in Australia and China.
