Check For Understanding:
What 2 parts of the plant take in the things they need to make food?
Check For Understanding:
Explain how plants make food.
Criteria For Success
Identify the 3 things plants need for food AND what part of the plant they enter.
Explain how plants use these 3 ingredients to get food matter.
Check For Understanding:
What do plants use food matter for?

What did you need to make your plant grow and thrive?
How did you add body matter to your plants?
When was your plant unable to grow and thrive?
We discussed chemical reactions in our last unit. When producers take water and carbon dioxide to make food using energy from sunlight, they are turning substances into a new substance. This means this is a chemical reaction that occurs in the producers!
We call this chemical reaction photosynthesis!
The chemical reaction of photosynthesis also produces oxygen which helps us humans stay alive!

Fill in each blank in this photosynthesis diagram showing how producers make food
| Draggable item | arrow_right_alt | Corresponding Item |
|---|---|---|
D | arrow_right_alt | Leaves absorb sunlight |
A | arrow_right_alt | Plant releases oxygen into the atmosphere |
C | arrow_right_alt | Carbon dioxide enters the leaf |
B | arrow_right_alt | Photosynthesis begins glucose (sugar) is made |
E | arrow_right_alt | Roots absorb water/nutrients |
Now that we’ve learned more about where plants get food molecules, let’s think about how what we have learned applies to the Costa Rican rain forest project area.

Where do food molecules for cecropia trees come from?
Criteria For Success
Identify 3 things plants use for food molecules AND what part of the plant they enter
