Question 16
16.

What is your takeaway from the picture "Evolution of the Alphabet" above?
A takeaway is a key fact, point, or idea to be remembered.

Use the key and instructions below to write your name in the first alphabet, Phoenician!
Step 1
Watch the video to the right. Follow along to the video as you complete the steps below.
Step 2
Write your name out on scratch paper.
Step 3
Write your name out without any vowels. Vowels are AEIOU. The Phoenicians didn't have vowels.
Step 4
Sound out your name without vowels. Then rewrite it the way it sounds.
Step 5
Take what you've created and flip it right to left. The Phoenicians write right to left. We write left to right. So flip it!
Step 6
Look at the Phoenician Alphabet and find the letters that they used but make a similar sound to ours. Replace all of the letters in your name with Phoenician letters.
Step 7
Rewrite your Phoenician name on blank paper in large letters or flip to the back. Make it look nice! This is your final draft.
Step 8
Show Mr. Bergh the final draft of your Phoenician name and pronounce it in Phoenician. Practice presenting to your table group first!
If you don't know how to present your name follow this pattern:
"My name in English is "...". In English it is spelled "...".
But if I were to go back in time my name would be pronounced "...".
Here is how it is spelt. (Show name to Mr. Bergh.)
Rubric (How you will be graded in the activity.)
4 - I wrote my name in Phoenician following all the steps and pronounced it in Phoenician.
3 - I wrote my name in Phoenician but broke at least one writing rule.
2 - I wrote my name in Phoenician but broke a few of the writing rules.

In 70 CE Rome destroyed what was left of the Jewish kingdom in Palestine. The Romans destroyed the 2nd temple and forced many Jews to flee their lands. The Jewish people took their sacred Torah with them as they fled, using the stories of the Great Exodus and the Exile to Babylon. They used these stories in the Torah to keep their faith in God and culture strong. No matter where the Jewish people went, no matter what things they learned, or what they had to live through, they remained uniquely Jewish. Separate from the mainstream culture of the communities they lived alongside. Even today Jewish communities exist around the world, especially in the United States, alongside or as a part of a larger non-Jewish community.
Depiction of the Roman triumph celebrating the Sack of Jerusalem on the Arch of Titus in Rome. The procession features the Menorah and other vessels taken from the Second Temple. Wherever Roman Emperors would conquer, they would have built in Rome large arches with inscriptions of their faraway victories to remind Romans of their success.
