Question 5
5.

Please use the Ethos, Logos, and Pathos handout for this question (on MB) - Please rewatch Melati and Isabel's TED Talk (1.05 to 2.00). We know from the Ethos, Logos, and Pathos video in our last class that a great way to use Pathos is to tell stories. What would the title of the story Melati and Isabel tell in this part of the video be if you could write it? What emotional reaction do Melati and Isabel want the audience to feel after hearing this story in this part of the presentation?

Joshua Bell played a concert in 2007 in Boston at a famous concert hall to a sold out crowd. The tickets for the concert cost at least $100. People sat quietly, listened, and applauded when he was done. Why did the audience listen?
Logos - the concert hall is a place where music is played, so the audience went there trusting Joshua Bell was good enough to play there.
Ethos - Joshua Bell had credibility with the audience already because they paid money to see him and because they knew his skills from his reputation.
Pathos - Joshua Bell's music happening in the concert hall with proper acoustics and chairs facing the stage created the right emotional environment for the audience to connect with his music.
All three of the above are correct.
Three days later, Joshua Bell played his violin on a subway platform as people walked by. What explains Joshua Bell's experience in the subway compared to the concert hall?
Logos - Joshua Bell had the same experience at the subway station because people in a concert hall or in a subway platform will always stop to listen to good music.
Ethos - Joshua Bell had no credibility with the audience on the subway platform because people don't expect to hear music there. For the people entering and leaving the subway, they were just going about their day. Joshua Bell was just more noise on a noisy subway platform.
Pathos - Because Joshua Bell played the exact same music on the exact same violin with the exact same passion and skill as he did in the concert hall, he got an equally respectful emotional connection with the people on the subway platform as he did in the concert hall.
All three of the above are correct.
