Big Ideas
- In this lesson we will learn how to find the molar mass of an element or compound!
- The molar mass tells you the mass of one mole of a substance.
- For pure, monatomic elements, the molar mass is equal to the relative atomic mass.
- For compounds, the molar mass can be calculated by adding up the relative atomic masses of each of the atoms in the compound.
- In the periodic table, the relative atomic mass is the small number at the bottom of the element square.
Tips
- If there is a subscript in a compound indicating that there are multiple atoms of a given element, don't forget to multiply the relative atomic mass of that element by that number!
