Lauren Tarshis is the best known author of the I Survived book series. It wasn't under later in life that she gained a love of reading while she was writing her novels. 

When Tarshis was young, she didn't enjoy reading until she found books that interested her in high school. She discovered nonfiction books that attracted her because she could imagine herself in the same situations the characters faced.
