Breathing Underwater Exploration
In this Exploration you will see pictures with various air temperatures and observe their effects on the water temperature, dissolved oxygen, and fish in a pond. Dissolved Oxygen is the amount of gaseous oxygen(O2) dissolved in the water. Oxygen enters the water by direct absorption from the atmosphere, by rapid movement, or as a waste product of plant photosynthesis.
For each set of pictures below answer the questions about those pictures.

at the top
at the bottom
What observation can you make about the movement of the fish?
Most fish swim near the top where the water is colder.
Most fish swim near the bottom where there is more dissolved oxygen.
Most fish swim near the bottom where the water is warmer.
Why do fish swim slower in colder water?
There is too much heat energy.
