Someone asked for a simple statement of the rules of asymptotes. Here they are.

Given a rational function

if n<m then there is a horizontal asymptote at x=0

if n=m then there is a horizontal asymptote at x=a/b

if n=m+1 then there is a slant asymptote that you can find using polynomial division

if n>m+1 there is no asymptote (asymptotes are usually considered to be straight lines) but there may be an asymptotic curve (again, using polynomial division.)
