I search the pews for Marisela's face. No Marisela. Maybe something bad happened to her. Maybe she was taken away. How many women back home have disappeared from one day to another? Too many to count. Maybe Marisela is trapped. How many women get to choose who to marry and can truly dictate their own life? As God is my witness, my daughter will have choices. I pray she'll be stubborn and free like Teresa.

Not understanding I just hug him, wrap my arms around his back, grab the heavy fabric of his long robe and hold it inside my fist. I breathe in his church smell and he lets me cling to him, pats my head, gently pushes me away.

Bless me, I say in Spanish.

God bless you.

He turns to greet another person.

I stand among all the people and fight back tears. I miss my father. I miss my mother. Bless me, I whisper to myself. Every morning, Papa and Mama, I ask them and they bless me.

God bless you, Ana, and may he give you wisdom.

I can't move my feet. Walk, I tell them, walk. An arm tugs mine. Rose gestures for me to escort her home. And suddenly I feel my legs again.

"Before the Ruiz brothers laid the slab of cement, the plot of land had been overgrown with fruit trees and weeds. Now it's a restaurant with a limited menu but a full bar. But one day, he says, one day the waitresses will wear uniforms and Juan will install a jukebox" (Cruz 165).

Cesar promised me he'll watch over you, Juan says, now standing and walking in circles.

Whatever needs to be done, I say with a sigh of a bad actress. Inside, I am screaming. Yes! Cesar! I can start English classes, and go on long walks, and Cesar will take me dancing. For sure, I will also be able to track down Marisela. She couldn't have broken her promise unless she had to.

Juan circles the coffee table, goes on and on and on about Dominican politics, how he knows a few people with enough influence who may still be able to protect assets...
...
And whatever happened to the coffee you offered me? Juan asks.

I head to the kitchen to my new life. Already I'm off checking in on my neighbor downstairs, helping her cross the street and doing her errands. I'm off to Woolworth's just a few blocks away, browsing each and every item on the shelf, intoxicated by the smell of pancakes and syrup. Adios, Juan, I'm off to see a movie with Cesar and later to try the hot dogs sold by the man below my window.

Black and sweet, just the way you like it, I say, handing Juan coffee.

After traveling the world I sit and listen to Juan still talking about paper and money, papers and money, and how much we stand to lose.
