Abraham Lincoln was our 16th president. He worked very hard for freedom and equality during his leadership. He was assassinated (or killed) on April 14, 1865. This was just when the Civil War was ending. In March of 1867, a monument was built to honor President Lincoln. A monument is a building or statue that helps people remember a person or event. The Lincoln Memorial is a large 19 foot tall statue of Abraham Lincoln. The monument can be seen in Washington, D.C.
