Have you ever retold a favorite story to a friend? If so, then you have practiced summarizing! Summary is a short statement or account of the main points of something. When we summarize, we don't tell every tiny detail. We focus on the most important parts of a story, a historical event or any kind of information we want to explain.
For example, let's think about a birthday party. There might be a lot of fun things that happen at a party, like playing games, eating cake, and opening presents. But a summary of a birthday party could be: "Samuel's 7th birthday party was at the city park. Many friends came, and they played fun games. Samuel blew out the candles on his Spiderman cake and opened lots of presents.”
When we learn about history in Social Studies, it's important to summarize too.
As you read texts and learn about events in history, you will practice summarizing. It's like putting everything you learned into a small, neat package. Summarizing helps us remember important details and share those details with others. How would you summarize your day? How would you summarize your favorite story or your favorite historical event?
