Sound Waves

Just what are we making when we make music? Although you can’t see them, sound waves travel through the air from a guitar to your ears.

A guitarist moves their fingers up and down the neck of the guitar to make the string shorter or longer. When a guitar string is strummed, it vibrates. This vibration moves the air in waves. These waves have amplitude (height) and wavelength (length). How fast or slow the string vibrates changes the waves. The amplitude and wavelength change to match the sound.

When the waves reach your ear, they travel inside to the inner ear where structures vibrate according to amplitude and wavelength. Your brain has learned to interpret the signal sent from ear to brain as music.
