It’s dark and cold, but you promised you would be at the hospital by 3:00 am in order to test one of the new 1. ______________________ imaging machines. After grabbing something to eat, you head to the hospital, which thankfully doesn’t look too busy. You check in with the charge nurse and find out that the manufacturer’s representative is here, too! That’s a first, so this must be one incredible and amazingly expensive machine. The representative is able to give you an introduction on how the machine works, where it needs to be located, and what to expect of it as a 2. ______________________ tool. Along with your technician, you examine it closely. The most immediate problem is finding a safe place to put it. After studying the 3. ______________________ and determining the best spot for the machine, you meet with the head of radiation to make your recommendations, and then it’s time for a test run. Of course, you are not going to try it out on a real patient, but the impressive new testing “dummies” can be programmed to exhibit all sorts of simulated conditions. After you make a few careful adjustments, all of the machine’s functions seem to be running smoothly. It’s time for a lunch break, since it has been a long morning. You sit down in the hospital cafeteria and are suddenly swamped with questions from the new resident about how you came to be a biomedical engineer. You explain that you’ve had a long-standing interest in 4. ______________________ , but that you found the machines were what really fascinated you. Mechanically, the new machine seems to be working well. Now you need to run the software that reads and interprets the information. Of course, installing the software comes first, and sometimes that doesn’t go smoothly. This time, however, it does, and the 5. ______________________ results of your test “patient” are appearing on the screen. You let the head of radiology know the machine is working, and soon three technicians, two nurses, and the hospital administrator are there for a “guided tour.” Although you prefer working with the machines themselves, 6. ______________________ the hospital employees who use them is a critical part of your job. Learning how these complicated machines work comes easily to you, but not to most other people. You start by showing them where the power switch is located, and then demonstrate the operational procedures carefully, step by step. You answer your co-workers’ questions patiently and promise to be on-hand when they are ready to use it for the first time. Finally, it’s time to go home. You love that you get to work with hospital machines to keep patients healthy, but sometimes the early shifts can seem longer than others. Fortunately, tomorrow is a regular day, and you can sleep in until 6:00 am!
