Some of you haven't gotten to the math involved in scientific notation yet, but it is pretty easy. Before we talk about what an exponent is, lets talk about what multiplication is. Multiplication is just repeated addition. so I can rewrite

The three is called the base, and the four is how many times you multiply that by itself. Notice that which number is the base and which number is the exponent matters. 3^4 is not the same as 4^3. which of the following is 4^3?

We won't go into the math of why negative exponents means dividing by the number again and again, but what I do want you to understand is that a negative exponent means that the number is really really small. So, match the decimal place to the fraction
