Energy to break bonds in ethanol = kJ/mol.

Total energy to break bonds in reactants = kJ/mol

Energy given out when new bonds in water are made = kJ/mol

Total energy to make bonds in products = kJ/mol

Energy change when ethanol is combusted = kJ/mol

Note the sign is negative as this is an exothermic reaction.
