In 312 CE Constantine was campaigning in Italy against his rival co-emperor Maxentius. According to later Roman historians, the night before the battle Constantine had a vision in which he saw a luminous cross in the sky and the Christian God promised him victory if he would have his soldiers mark their shields with symbols representing Christ. Shortly thereafter he won a decisive victory, thereby becoming uncontested emperor of the whole Roman Empire. In gratitude, Constantine famously declared the “Edict of Milan” in 313 CE: “And thus . . . no one whatsoever should be denied the opportunity to give his heart to the observance of the Christian religion, or of that religion which he should think best for himself, so that the Supreme Deity (to whose worship we freely yield our hearts) may show in all things His usual favor and benevolence.”
