periodic table
the smallest particle of an element that maintains all properties of that element
atomic number
two or more atoms bonded together
molecule
A substance made of one type of molecule, where that molecule is made up of two or more different types of atoms
bond
forces that hold atoms together in molecules
Chemical symbols
a pure substance made up of only one type of atom

A chemical formula for an molecule will tell you a couple things. To start with - it will tell you have types of atoms are in the molecule. To do this it will use each type of atom's chemical symbol. There will also be a subscript number that will tell you how many of that atom there will be. So H_2O is a chemical formula for water. There are two Hydrogens (H) and one oxygen (no need for a subscript if there is only one). How many atoms total are in the H_2O_2 molecule?

Sometimes you will see a number in front of a chemical formula. Like this -

that just tells me you have three of the same kind of molecule. If I have 3Fe_2O_3, how many oxygen atoms do I have total?

Sort the following as either an ELEMENT or a COMPOUND

  • Oxygen =O_2
  • Water = H_2O
  • Gold = Au
  • Sugar = C_{12}H_{22}O_{11}
