Which of these is not an energy store?
What type of energy store is coal?
How long does it take fossil fuels to form?
What energy store is associated with wind?
Where does the wind get its energy from?
Some railways still use ‘steam engines’ which burn fuel in the engine to work. Suggest a suitable fuel that could be used.
Which of the following do not require fuel to generate electricity?
Many people rely on freezers for the long term storage of food. Why is this a problem if the electrical supply is interrupted? (hand mark)
Water falls through a height of 5 m in hydroelectric power station A. It falls through a height of 10 m in hydroelectric power station B. Which one will generate the most power and why?
What gas is produced when fossil fuels are burned?
Explain how a hydroelectric power station works.
In my role as a renewable energy consultant, every day is an opportunity to contribute to a sustainable future. My work mainly involves researching, planning and implementing energy solutions that are both environmentally friendly and cost effective. Each day, I meet with clients, analyse energy data, and develop strategic plans for using renewable energy sources. This may result in the use of wind turbines, which use the wind to turn blades and generate electricity, or solar, by installing solar panels to generate electricity from sunlight.
Typically my day starts by reviewing the energy needs of my clients. This can be a small business looking to reduce its carbon footprint or a local community aiming to rely more on renewable energy. I might look at their current energy consumption, see where and when they are using the most energy, and then identify opportunities for efficiency. After this analysis I often meet with clients to discuss their renewable energy options. These could involve installing solar panels or setting up wind turbines. I explain the benefits and potential challenges of each, and then together we decide on the best approach. The rest of my day is often spent designing custom renewable energy systems and working closely with engineers and technicians to make sure these designs become reality.
What I love most about being a renewable energy consultant is the satisfaction that comes from finding practical solutions to real‐world problems. Every solar panel installed or wind turbine erected signifies a step towards a more sustainable future, and knowing that I have played a part in that is incredibly rewarding. But beyond the satisfaction, it is the usefulness of my job that brings true fulfilment. By helping individuals, businesses and communities transition to renewable energy, I am making a direct impact on our planet’s health. In addition, seeing the excitement of clients when they realise how much they can save on energy costs and reduce their environmental impact is the icing on the cake.
My job might be challenging sometimes, but the rewards – both tangible and intangible – are absolutely
worth it.
Why does Miles find his job rewarding?
Company B is located in a coastal region where the winds are strong and constant throughout the year.
The area gets moderate sunlight and there is a river nearby. Given these conditions, which renewable
energy source would be most appropriate for Company B, and why?
