“College athletes could soon receive some of the money their sports have brought to their colleges. The new deal is waiting to be approved by a judge.

The proposed settlement of a national class-action lawsuit has been approved by the National
Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA). Major college conferences, like the Big Ten, have also
accepted it. A class-action lawsuit is filed by a group of people who have similar claims.

A judge still must accept the proposal, which can also be challenged by individual plaintiffs. A
plaintiff is a person who brings a case to court. There are questions about how it will work and
whether future court cases may stop it. Yet college sports are clearly pointed toward a new path
that could see some of the wealthiest schools paying athletes to play.”
