Dialogue is used when characters speak their words out loud. Dialogue tags are things like he said, she whispered, etc. The placement of the dialogue tag determines how you punctuate the dialogue.

Dialogue is used when characters speak their words out loud. Dialogue tags are things like he said, she whispered, etc. The placement of the dialogue tag determines how you punctuate the dialogue. 

When a dialogue tag, comes at the end, the dialogue is punctuated like the sentences below.
Try to notice: What words are capitalized? Where are the commas, quotation marks, and other pieces of punctuation?
Then write a sentence of your own with dialogue tags at the end.

"Pleased to meet you, Grandma," she said.
"It's almost eighty miles," she replied.
"Welcome to Welch!" he declared.
"Are we ever going home?" she asked him.

When a dialogue tag, comes at the beginning, the dialogue is punctuated like the sentences below.

Then write a sentence of your own with dialogue tags at the beginning.

She said, "I'm just going to make one up."
He exclaimed, "I'm going to find it!"

"Uhhh," she nervously replied, "why do you need to know?"
