The Value of Community Celebrations
(1) By definition, celebrations are intended to be fun. (2) However, this expectation does not mean that they should be viewed as something extra or expendable. (3) In fact, they are usually very well attended. (4) They are important to the health and well-being of a town. (5) They bring together people of different backgrounds and remind them of shared goals. (6) This can foster a sense of pride and unity. (7) These positive feelings make people want to work for the community’s success.

(8) There are countless ways for a community to celebrate together. (9) Holidays are one opportunity. (10) While a fireworks display on the Fourth of July may be too expensive, a parade down Main Street can be organized at minimal cost and can be just as much fun. (11) Concerts, outdoor movies, and sporting events are great choices for summer activities. (12) Fall is a good time for a craft festival or carnival. (13) And winter is perfect for sharing holiday-themed treats, songs, and decorations. (14) Some towns also have a Founders’ Day celebration. (15) This special day reminds residents of the often rich and fascinating history of their community.

(16) Ideally, a town should hold the same events year after year. (17) This gives community members some activities that they can count on and look forward to. (18) It also gives long-term residents something in common with newer ones. (19) There are few activities that welcome people of all ages and backgrounds. (20) A community celebration is one of the things that can fill this gap.

(21) Some people say that a community event requires too much time, work, and money to put together. (22) Depending on how large, complex, or big a celebration is, volunteers may have to start planning a whole year in advance. (23) And not all planning tasks are enjoyable. (24) It may even be difficult to recruit people for the less popular jobs. (25) But organizers need to remember that a successful event will be worth all the time and effort in the end. (26) If people can stay focused on the goal, they will not regret working with others to make their town a better place to live.

(27) Studies show that too many Americans feel a lack of connection with their neighbors. (28) Community celebrations are a way to combat this unfortunate fact. (29) They bring people together for enjoyable activities and remind residents of all that they have in common. (30) This bonding continues afterward, when people discuss the event or view photos and newspaper articles about it. (31) Community celebrations can help most people in a variety of ways and should be encouraged by lawmakers.
