Reading Passage: The Lost Kitten

The tiny kitten, no bigger than a teacup, shivered in the cold rain. Its fur was matted and muddy, and its eyes, wide with fear, searched desperately for its mother. A gust of wind rattled the trash cans nearby, making the kitten jump. It let out a pitiful mew, a small sound lost in the rumble of the passing cars. A shadow fell over the kitten, and it braced itself for the worst. But instead of a scary monster, a gentle hand reached down, scooped it up, and held it close. Warmth spread through the kitten’s small body, and it finally felt safe.
