The Community Garden
When Ms. Torres moved into the neighborhood, she noticed the empty lot on the corner. It was full of weeds and trash. One day, she posted a note at the library: “Let’s build a garden for everyone—volunteers needed!”
At first, only two kids showed up. But by the next Saturday, there were ten people pulling weeds, planting seeds, and building raised beds. Soon, tomatoes, peppers, and herbs grew tall under the sun.
Ms. Torres smiled as she saw neighbors chatting, sharing recipes, and laughing together. “This is what a real community looks like,” she said.
Passage 2: The Recycled Bench
Drew watched as students walked past the pile of plastic bottles outside the cafeteria. “There has to be something better we can do with those,” he said.
He researched recycling projects and found a company that turned plastic into benches. He shared the idea with his teacher and soon had permission to collect bottles from the school. With help from classmates, Drew gathered enough to order a bench made entirely from recycled plastic.
When the bench was delivered, it was placed in front of the school with a sign: “Built from care—powered by students.”
Drew smiled. “Now our trash is something to be proud of.”
