Plants are everywhere! A plant has many working parts and each part has a specific function. They all need to work together in order for the plant to survive.
The roots of the plant grow underground and gather all of the water and nutrients it needs to survive. Fibrous roots and taproots are the two main types of roots. Fibrous roots have a lot of different roots that grow in many different directions. Taproots will have one main root that grows straight down.
The stem of the plant has two main jobs. First, it keeps the plant from falling over. Second, all of the water and nutrients collected from the roots travel through the stem to the different parts of the plant. The stem can also store food for the plant.
The leaves of the plants produce food through a process called photosynthesis. The leaves take the energy from the sunlight to produce the food the plant needs. Most leaves are flat and thin so the plant can get as much sunlight as possible.
Once the plant has matured, it will grow flowers if it is a flowering plant, also called an angiosperm. Once the flower is pollinated it will produce seeds. The seeds fall to the ground and new flowering plants are grown. Some plants can grow fruit after it has matured. Similar to the flower, the seeds from the fruit fall and more fruit plants can grow.
