A New Job for Jairo

Jairo is 15 years old and lives in Rincon, Bonaire. He has just started a part-time job at a small snack bar near his school. He works on Wednesday and Friday afternoons, and every Saturday. He helps with cleaning tables, taking orders, and sometimes even making fries when it’s not too busy.
At first, Jairo was nervous. He had never worked with customers before. But after a few days, he started to enjoy it. “Most people are really friendly,” he says. “I like it when someone says thank you or smiles at me.”
Jairo earns $10 an hour, which he saves to buy a new bike. His old one broke last month, and walking everywhere in the sun isn’t fun. He also gives part of his money to his grandmother, who lives with them.
Working at the snack bar has taught Jairo many things. He’s learned how to speak clearly, how to stay calm when it’s busy, and how to work with adults. His boss says he’s doing a great job.
“I’m tired at the end of the day,” says Jairo, “but I feel proud. I’m learning new things every week, and I think this will help me when I’m older.”

A Holiday in Suriname

Last December, Alicia and her family went on holiday to Suriname. Her grandmother was born there, but Alicia had never been before. They stayed for two weeks and visited both the city and the rainforest.
They first arrived in Paramaribo, where they visited markets, churches, and a museum. Alicia loved trying new food like pom, peanut soup, and tropical fruit juices. “The mangoes were the best I’ve ever had,” she said.
After a few days, they travelled by boat to a small village in the rainforest. There were no cars, only wooden houses and dirt paths. They slept under mosquito nets and woke up to the sounds of birds and monkeys. Alicia helped her dad catch fish for dinner, and her little brother tried to climb trees (and fell in the mud once).
The trip was different from anything Alicia had ever done. She learned about the Maroon culture, swam in a river, and met cousins she didn’t know she had. “It wasn’t always easy,” she said, “but I saw how people live without much money and still smile every day. It really opened my eyes.”

Test Week

Daniel doesn’t like test week. “I always get nervous,” he says. He studies a lot, but when the test paper is in front of him, he sometimes forgets everything. Last year, he even got a headache and couldn’t finish one of his exams.
This time, Daniel decided to prepare differently. He made a study schedule two weeks before test week started. He studied for one subject each day and used flashcards to learn new words. He also watched short videos to understand grammar and did old tests from last year.
The day before the English test, Daniel went to bed at 9 o’clock and turned off his phone. “No TikTok tonight,” he told himself. The next morning, he got up early, took his time to have breakfast, and went for a short walk. He felt calm and ready. In the classroom, he read all the questions slowly and made sure he understood them before writing.
After the test, Daniel felt good. “I think I did better this time,” he said. “Even if I don’t get a perfect score, I tried my best.” His teacher smiled and said, “You prepared well — that’s already a big step.”

Best Friends Again

Freya and Yara have been best friends since they were nine years old. They sit next to each other in class, walk home together after school, and always make silly videos on the weekend. But last month, they had their first big argument.
Yara borrowed Freya’s new headphones without asking and broke them by accident. Freya was very upset and didn’t talk to her for a whole week. Yara felt bad, but she also thought Freya was making too big a deal out of it. They stopped sitting together, and things felt strange.
Then one Friday, Yara wrote a short note and gave it to Freya during break. It said, “I’m sorry. I should’ve asked. You’re right. Can we talk?” Freya smiled when she read it. After school, they sat on a bench and talked honestly. Freya explained why she was hurt, and Yara promised to be more careful.
That weekend, they made a new funny video — this time about two best friends who argue over snacks. “This is so us,” said Yara. They both laughed. The headphones were broken, but their friendship was not.
