Response to Audio Prompt
Tell me one challenge you think pioneers may have faced while traveling west, and explain why you think it would have been difficult.
In 1845, twelve-year-old Emma sat beside her mother in a creaky covered wagon. Her family had left their small home in Missouri to journey west on the Oregon Trail. The road ahead was long, over 2,000 miles of rocky paths, wide rivers, and endless prairies. Their oxen pulled the wagon slowly, and the family could only travel about 15 miles a day.
Each morning, Emma helped gather firewood, and each night they camped under the stars. She missed her old home, but her parents said they’d find rich farmland in Oregon. Along the way, they faced sickness, dust storms, and steep mountains. There were no stores, no roads, and no maps, just the hope of a better life ahead.
Compare Emma’s journey in the 1800s with Maya’s trip in modern times. Think about how each girl traveled, what challenges they faced, and anything they had in common.
In the left circle, write things that are true only for Emma’s trip in the 1800s.
In the right circle, write things that are true only for Maya’s trip in 2025.
In the middle section, write things that apply to both girls.
