The structure of your analytical essay in Term 3 will be:

  • Introduction

  • TEEML x1 - 1 quote about theme and 1 quote about theme & literary device

  • TEEML x2 - 1 quote about theme and 1 quote about theme & literary device

  • TEEML x3 - 1 quote about theme and 1 quote about theme & literary device

  • Conclusion

You will now practice writing your first TEEML paragraph based on your chosen theme from 'The Outsiders':

  • Topic sentence: introduce a scene from the book and how it's related to your theme and contention.

  • Example/Explain: embed your quote and in detail now, explain how it's related to your theme and contention.

  • Explain/Example: embed your quote and in detail now, explain how it's related to your theme and contention.

  • Metalanguage (same meaning as 'literary device' or 'technique'): embed your quote and/or discuss a literary device from the book that is both a literary device and about your theme. Discuss the author's purpose for adding this literary device.

  • Linking/concluding sentence: wrap and remind the reader what your paragraph was about - your theme, the scene and your contention
