The Ancestral Puebloans (Anasazi)

The Ancestral Puebloans, also known as the Anasazi, were an ancient Native American culture that thrived in the southwestern United States. They are known for their unique building structures, like cliff dwellings found in areas such as Mesa Verde and Chaco Canyon. These structures were made from sandstone and mud mortar, designed to fit naturally into the landscape.

The Ancestral Puebloans’ society was highly organized, with a focus on community and religion. They practiced agriculture, growing crops like corn, beans, and squash. Despite the arid climate, they developed innovative irrigation systems to support their agriculture.

Trade was essential to their culture, as evidenced by artifacts from distant regions found in Puebloan sites. By trading with nearby tribes, they obtained resources not available in their region, such as turquoise and shell jewelry.

However, around 1300 AD, the Ancestral Puebloans began to leave their settlements. While the exact reason is debated, it is believed that a combination of factors such as drought, resource depletion, and social changes led to their migration.
