Slaves in the South before the Civil War frequently used hollowed-out gourds to dip water, making them familiar with the shape and use of a "drinking gourd". The Big Dipper, a constellation, is also known as the "drinking gourd" because its shape resembles a dipper. The two stars at the end of the Big Dipper's bowl always point to the North Star (Polaris), which is a reliable beacon for navigating north for slaves seeking freedom.
